About Beverly

Welcome! My name is Beverly Harzog. I’m a nationally-recognized credit card expert, consumer advocate, debt coach, speaker, and an award-winning author.

My book about my decade of unbridled spending, Confessions of a Credit Junkie, is an Amazon #1 Best Seller in three categories: Personal Money Management, Budgeting, and Finance. Over a 10-year span I amassed over $20,000 in credit card debt. The good news is that I paid it off in two years. In Credit Junkie, I show you exactly how I did it.

I also run a popular consumer credit blog, which has had over 1.18 million page views and over 563,000 visitors in just the past year.

If you’re with the media…

I’d love to help you with your credit-related stories. I respect deadlines and I respond promptly. My advice has been featured in thousands of publications, websites, TV, and radio. Do a Google search on “credit card expert,” and below the ads, you’ll see my name as the #1 organic search result on the first page.

Here’s a short list of where I’ve appeared on TV: Fox News, ABC News Now, FoxNews.com LIVE, CNN Newsource, NBC New York, Fox News 5 NY, NY1, and more. You can see my TV videos right here. I’m also a veteran guest on radio shows across the country, including ABC News Radio and Bloomberg Radio.

My advice has been featured on major websites and in print, including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CNNMoney.com, The New York Times, Money Magazine, Kiplinger, Family Circle, Time.com, MSN.com, Real Simple, Forbes, WomansDay.com, New York Daily News, MarketWatch, Redbook, NBCNews.com, Washington Post, Boston Globe, ABCNews.com, ConsumerAffairs.com, Consumers Digest, ClarkHoward.com, Fitness Magazine, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Chicago Tribune, and much, much more.

If you’re a consumer…

My mission in life is to help you stay out of credit trouble. But if you’re already having a credit card crisis and you have debt, I’m here to help you break free from it.

You can get true insider advice from my blog, my books, and asking me questions via email. I do credit card reviews on request. Basically, I’m kind of like the piano player of credit card reviews. But only better because you don’t have to leave a tip in my jar!

I have the most comprehensive and unbiased secured credit card list on the Internet. Yes, I’m the Secured Credit Card Queen of the Internet. If you need to rebuild or establish credit and you can’t get approved for an unsecured credit card, check out this list: The Best (and Worst) Secured Credit Cards. I have generous and totally awesome readers and some of the card reviews have hundreds of comments and cardholder insights.

Note that I said my reviews are “unbiased”? If you apply for a card that I’ve reviewed, I don’t accept a referral fee if you’re approved. If I accepted referral fees, I wouldn’t be allowed to speak my mind. I know this because I tried it and a few issuers were not happy with things that I said! That was a deal breaker for me. So with my reviews, you can be confident that you’re getting a neurotically thorough (and sometimes snarky) review.

Besides card reviews, I also post about how to rebuild or establish credit, raise your credit score, and how to get out of credit card debt. This year, I’ll also be offering debt coaching and online courses and they will be available soon.

To subscribe to my blog, check out the “Subscribe” box that’s up above and to the right side of this page (just above the “Search this site” box). Your wallet and your credit score will thank you!

My books

If you have credit card debt, you’ll find easy-to-follow tips in my latest best-selling book, The Debt Escape Plan: How to Free Yourself From Credit Card Balances, Boost Your Credit Score, and Live Debt-Free (Career Press, 2015). The Debt Escape Plan has been featured in hundreds (and hundreds!) of media outlets, including TV, radio, online, and print. The New York Daily News did a two-page feature on me and my book: 5 Tips to Eliminate Credit Card Debt Tips.

Get more details about this book and how it can help you escape from your debt right here. On that page, you’ll also find links to free worksheets to help you work on your budget and organize your payoff strategy.

In late 2013, I published the #1 Amazon Best Seller, Confessions of a Credit Junkie: Everything You Need to Know to Avoid the Mistakes I Made (Career Press). If you struggle to understand how credit cards work, need help choosing the right type of cards, and find the fine print mind-numbingly dull and about as coherent as dolphin squeak, then Credit Junkie will help you.

I’m proud to say that Confessions of a Credit Junkie won an Outstanding Nonfiction Book Award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors. It was also a Color of Money Book Club pick by Washington Post columnist Michelle Singletary. Get more details about this book right here.

Other Books: I’m also the co-author of Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits: Four Keys to Unlock Your Business Potential (Greenleaf Publishing, June 2011) and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Person-to-Person Lending (Alpha Books/Penguin, April 2009).

I’ve been a book-writing maniac for the past two years. Seriously? I’m not happy unless I’m working on a book and I have a new one in the works right now. It’s too early for details, but stay tuned and you’ll hear about it soon.

Corporate services offered

I spent a lot of years working for corporations because I have a past life as a CPA. I understand corporate culture and that each company is unique.

Here’s what I offer:

  • Spokesperson and brand ambassador: I have years of experience representing finance-related websites in the media. I’ve been quoted extensively in major media markets and gotten positive press on behalf of companies and their brands.
  • Credit-related workshops:  I can tailor a workshop to meet your employees’ needs. Possible topics: Getting out of debt, managing your credit life for fun and profit, and boosting your credit score.
  • Debt coaching: If debt is a problem for your employees, I can offer one-on-one coaching or offer group coaching.
  • Keynotes: For conferences and associations, I can deliver an entertaining presentation that the audience will enjoy. I’ve spoken at dozens of conferences and have received stellar reviews.

Finally, some personal stuff

I’m a recovering CPA and I spent a decade in cubicle hell. I escaped to become a finance journalist so I could help others avoid my truly dumb credit mistakes.

I’m a native of Atlanta (there are maybe five of us), but I spent two years in Connecticut. There, I earned an MBA from the University of New Haven in Connecticut. I also spent two years in a doctoral program at the University of Georgia studying speech communication. Just in case it isn’t clear, I love education and I have had an overdose of it!

I live with my husband, an emotionally-needy Maltese named Marshall, and Max, a water snake (no, really) in Johns Creek, Georgia, a northern suburb of Atlanta. The snake belongs to my son who is working on an undergrad degree in business at Georgia State University. I’m really hoping he remembers to come and get the snake when he graduates and gets his own place. My daughter is engaged and working on her master’s degree in Higher Ed Administration at the University of South Carolina.

Believe it or not, I do relax on occasion. I’m an exercise junkie, I love to listen to music (everything but country), and I’m a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan. I’m happiest when I can combine all three. So I often enjoy listening to music (but not country), watching the MLB Network to catch baseball news or a game, and jogging on my treadmill.
